Maryland County Population Change: 2018 to 2019

The U.S. Census Bureau recently released their county population estimates for 2019. Overall, Maryland’s population increased 9,878 from 6,035,802 in July 2018 to 6,045,680 in July 2019, an increase of 0.2%.

Among the sub-state jurisdictions, there was notable variation (Figure 1). Six counties and Baltimore City recorded population decline, but only Baltimore City’s population declined by more than 525 people from 2018 to 2019. The City of Baltimore lost 8,953 people from July 2018 to July 2019, a decline of 1.5%.

The population in the remaining seventeen counties increased from 2018 to 2019. Among the seventeen counties that grew, six counties added more than 1,000 people. Harford County added 1,599 people, increasing 0.6% from 2018 to 2019. Charles County grew by 1,781 people from 2018 to 2019, an increase of 1.1%. Montgomery County’s population increased 2,210 from 2018 to 2019, just 0.2%. The population of Howard County increased 3,069, or 1.0%, from 2018 to 2019. Anne Arundel County added 3,711 people from July 2018 to July 2019, an increase of 0.6%. Finally, Frederick County’s population increased the most, gaining 4,604 people from 2018 to 2019, an increased of 1.8%.

For comparison, the District of Columbia added 4,202 people between July 2018 and July 2019. In Virginia, Fairfax County lost 931 residents from 2018 to 2019, a decline of 0.01%. Arlington County’s population increased by 817, or 0.3%.
